Music for 6 Baroque Timpani, Oboe and Trumpet
I Virtuosi
In the 18th century a small number of composers wrote music for travelling timpani virtuosi, among them some quite distinguished ones as Graupner and Druschetzky. The timpani were mainly used as a basso continuo voice with some melodic passages and cadenza's, in which showmanship, flexibility, and musicality could be shown to the public. Most pieces were written for larger ensemble and a number of baroque timpani, varying from 6 to 16 kettledrums. I felt the time was right to compose a piece for smaller ensemble in this tradition. The instruments that have been historically connected with the kettledrums in the ceremonial and military music, oboe and trumpet, are partners in this polyphonic suite.
